JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri House is creating a new committee of state lawmakers to review procedures for handling driver's licenses.

House Speaker Tim Jones announced Monday the formation of the Special Interim Committee on Privacy Protection to be led by Republican Stanley Cox, of Sedalia. Cox also is chairman of a separate panel of lawmakers and law enforcement officials focused on the same issue who tussled with Gov. Jay Nixon's administration over an effort to compel testimony through subpoenas.

Nixon's administration challenged the subpoenas and Jones has withdrawn them. Cox on Monday said one disputed point had been whether a subpoena could be issued for a committee consisting of lawmakers and non-legislators.

Cox says he is convinced the previous subpoenas were valid but that the new committee removes the potential for disputes.
