GRANT CITY, Mo. (AP) - Voters in a northwest Missouri county elected a man who died in October to serve as presiding commissioner.
Kevin Austin won the election Tuesday with 345 votes. Austin died Oct. 17 from a blood clot in his lungs.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports that Austin, a Democrat, won the primary election and was to be the only candidate on Tuesday's ballot. After his death, Billy Mozingo, the incumbent presiding commissioner, and Douglas Alee, decided to run as write-in candidates.
Mozingo received 319 votes and Alee 183.
Worth County Clerk Lisa Hargrave says the governor will appoint a new presiding commissioner.
