SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) -- A Central Missouri county has banned the possession and sale of a synthetic compound that mimics the effects of marijuana.
The Sedalia Democrat reports that Pettis County may be the first county in the nation to ban the substance, which is combined with a mix of dried flowers, herbs and tobacco. It is smoked like marijuana.
The ordinance approved Monday makes it a misdemeanor offense to sell or possess the product. It is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine up to $500. Punishment increases for multiple offenses.

The Missouri Legislature is considering a ban on the compound that would make possession a felony. A similar measure is being considered in Kansas.
