BRANSON, Mo. -- The Southeast Missourian has won four awards in the Missouri APME 2005 News Writing Contest. The winners were announced last weekend at the Missouri Society of Newspaper Editors conference in Branson.
The Southeast Missourian staff received a first place award in the Community Affairs/Public Interest category for its series of stories about litter. The judges commented, "This is a great story that's sitting right in front of almost every one of us. But this newspaper did something about it."
Southeast Missourian news editor Bob Miller won a first-place award in the Headline Writing category for his headline "Improved Cache flow" for a story about the Cache River Wetlands in Southern Illinois.
Rudi Keller and T.J. Greaney received a second-place award in the Spot News category for their story "Taum Sauk Levee Breaks."
Sports writer Marty Mishow was named winner of a third-place award in the Spot Sports category for his story "Source says Samuel has football job." It announced prior to a scheduled press conference that Purdue University assistant Tony Samuel had been named to coach the Southeast Missouri State University team.
