Missouri St. to lose scholarships over academics

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri State University football and basketball programs will lose scholarships after failing to meet the NCAA's requirements for academic progress.

The university announced Wednesday that the men's basketball program will lose one of its 13 scholarships for the 2011-12 season. Football will lose 2.83 scholarships for the 2010-2011 season.

The four-year average required score for all NCAA Division I sports is 925. The football program recorded an academic progress rate of 921, while basketball had a score of 908.

If the university makes satisfactory progress, it could receive a conditional waiver in the future if its APR scores in the sports don't reach the 925 margin again.

Director of Athletics Kyle Moats says in a news release that the school has implemented changes to better monitor classroom performance, provide more academic support and increase accountability.
