Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster has named Tom Durkin to a newly created post dedicated to Sunshine Law education.
As the attorney general's public education director, Durkin will travel around Missouri, making presentations to city, county, state and other agencies on the open meetings and records law.
Durkin is a former Missouri Senate administrative assistant and Missouri Supreme Court communications coordinator. His background includes teaching high school for eight years in Burbank, Calif., and working as a professional actor for 17 years.
Koster announced Durkin's hiring as part of Sunshine Law Week, which started Sunday and ends Saturday. Sunshine Week is a national annual awareness campaign to emphasize the importance of open government and freedom of information.
In announcing Durkin's hiring, Koster said he wants to see four times the number of Sunshine Law presentations.
The attorney general's office offers a free summary of the Sunshine Law, frequently asked questions, interpretations of the law and sample forms for public governmental bodies online as well as in print.
