CHARLESTON -- Tax rates for the 1999 year have been set and approved for Mississippi County.

The commissioners approved the Ad Valorem Tax Rates, or property tax rates, as recommended by Junior DeLay, county clerk at a recent meeting.

The first rate to be set was for the county's general revenue fund. According to DeLay, general revenue has a levy ceiling of 46 cents, which must be rolled back by 14 cents due to the sales tax. DeLay recommended rolling back the levy rate an additional 6 cents. The new rate will be 26 cents, up from the 20 cents per $100 assessed value levied last year.

Residents of Charleston will see a net increase of five cents. East Prairie residents will see a net decrease of 14 cents.
