MIDLAND, Texas -- A 48-year-old Missouri minister convicted of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter faces more than 50 years in prison.
Jurors deliberated late into the night Friday to first reach a verdict and then suggest a punishment for the Rev. Eddie Wells of Matthews, Mo. They settled on a sentence of 50 years in prison for each of the four counts for which he was convicted.
A judge will decide how Wells will serve the sentences during a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
The victim, now 26 and living in Tyler, said the abuse began in 1989 when she was 9 years old and continued until 1992. Her mother was Wells' second wife and the family lived in Midland at the time.
Wells' defense countered that the accusations surfaced last year as retaliation because the minister had fallen behind on child support payments to his ex-wife, the accuser's mother.
