Miner aldermen raise fines for littering

MINER, Mo. -- Litterbugs in Miner will now face a stiffer fine if caught.

The Miner Board of Aldermen approved an amendment to the city's illegal dumping and littering ordinance during their regular monthly meeting Tuesday.

The change raises the fine for littering offenses to $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second offense and $100 on a third offense.

Before the amendment, the fine was only $5 for a first offense, according to Danielle Patrick, city clerk.

The change was prompted by littering on Malone Avenue, Mayor Frank Tatum said.

"It's a big littering problem is what it is," Tatum said. "We have found mattresses out there sometimes on a Monday morning. It's a lot of odd things we find out there."

City attorney Joe Fuchs recommended the fine on a third offense be set at $300 but board members said that would be too much for some people to be able to pay.
