Miller named to national health committee

Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller has been named to the National Association of Counties Health Steering Committee.

Each of the association's 11 committees includes 60 to 100 county officials from around the nation. The committees meet several times a year to examine issues critical to county governments.

The Health Steering Committee focuses on health care delivery and financing, including indigent care, health care for the uninsured, Medicaid, Medicare and local public health programs.

Cape Elks Lodge to hold craft fair today

The Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge No. 639 will hold a crafts fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the lodge, 639 Elks Lane.

Admission is $1.

Glenn House to be topic for historical meeting

The Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Activities Room at Saxony Village.

Jeremy Wells, executive director of the Glenn House, will present a program titled "The Glenn House Past and Present."

Society to present program on cave bats

The Four Seasons Audubon Society will present "Cave Ecology: Bats and More" at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Conservation Center building at County Park North in Cape Girardeau. Dr. William Elliott, a cave biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, will be the speaker. This program is open to the public. For more information, call Bill Eddleman at 335-1507.

Genealogy society to meet Tuesday

An informal meeting of the Cape Girardeau Genealogy Society will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson, Mo. This open forum meeting will concentrate on research. Board members will be on hand to assist novices. The featured family will be the Limbaugh family.

Scott City Women's Club annual event Tuesday

The Scott City Women's Club is hosting their annual Make, Bake & Take and Chili Dinner Tuesday in the Scott City School multipurpose room. The chili dinner starts at 6 p.m., and the auction begins at 7 p.m. A variety of homemade crafts and baked goods will be auctioned off. The dinner menu will include chili, pecan pie, cookies, tea and coffee. The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for children. Children age 6 and under eat free.

Scott City hosts haunted hayride

The Scott City Park Board will be hosting a haunted hayride along with their annual Halloween parade.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Lineup will be at the Assembly of God on Dearborn at 9 a.m. The parade will end on Second Street East, where the costume judging will take place.

The haunted hayride will be held at the new recycling center. It will begin with the gate opening at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The first ride will start at dark. On Sunday, the gate will open at 4:30 p.m.

Chapter sponsoring scholarship pageant

The Jacksonian Charter Chapter of the American Business Women Association (ABWA) is sponsoring the Miss Jackson Scholarship Pageant, Miss Christmas, Miss Junior Christmas, Miss Holly and the Little Miss Snowball and Little Miss Snowflake Pageants. The pageants will be held at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

The winner of the Miss Jackson Scholarship Pageant will represent Jackson in the Miss Missouri Scholarship Pageant, whose winner will then represent Missouri at the Miss America Scholarship Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J.

The Miss Christmas, Miss Junior Christmas, Miss Holly and the Little Miss Snowball and Little Miss Snowflake Pageants award savings bonds and prizes. The winners will have the opportunity to compete at the state Miss Missouri Misses Pageant.

Cape police honored for work with Torch Run

The law enforcement community and Special Olympics honored Chief Steve Strong and the Cape Girardeau Police Department during the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run awards luncheon Sept. 18 in Osage Beach, Mo.

Strong was recognized as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for Region 6. He has worked behind the scenes raising money for five years.

The Cape police department was recognized for the Highest Gross Increase for Region 6, with an increase of $4,288 in the year 2000.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a campaign conducted by law enforcement agencies across Missouri to support the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri with volunteer and fund-raising efforts. Missouri's LETR was founded in 1986 by the Missouri Police Chiefs Association.
