Cape man nominated for military lawyer award
Capt. Gabriel Hinkebein, son of Thomas and Laura Hinkebein of Cape Girardeau, has been nominated for the "Outstanding Young Military Service Lawyer Award" for 2000-2001.
The nomination was based on Hinkebein's excellence in the delivery of legal services, leadership abilities, performance of duty, demonstration scholarship and service to his community.
Hinkebein, a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, is a judge advocate general attorney with the U.S. Army.
Seaman begins training exercises in Brunei
Navy Seaman Michael A. Furlow of Cobden, Ill., has started Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercises in Brunei while assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan.
Furlow, grandson of Bob and Bettie Mowery of Anna, Ill., and a grandson of Raymond and Martha Furlow of Cobden, is a graduate of Cobden High School. He joined the Navy in June 2000.
Oran Marine completes amphibian training
Marine Pfc. Johnathan J. Graviett, son of James D. Graviett of Oran, and Kathie E. Graviett of Chaffee, recently completed the Basic Assault Amphibian Vehicle Crewman's course.
Graviett is a 2001 graduate of Oran High School. He joined the Marine Corps in May 2001.
Jackson man completes Marine basic training
Marine Pfc. Louis M. Dyinger of Jackson has completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at San Diego, Calif.
Dyinger, son of Steve R. Tiller of Mount Vernon, Mo., and Rebecca J. Kimbell of Jackson, is a graduate of Jackson High School.
Area Marine completes assault vehicle course
Marine Pfc. Johnny L. Ritchie, son of Cora C. and Larry Ritchie of Olive Branch, Ill., has completed the Basic Assault Amphibian Vehicle Crewman's course at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Ritchie is a 2001 graduate of Bourbon, Mo., High School.
Private completes Marine basic training
Marine Pvt. Brian T. Blattel recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.
Blattel, son of Tom M. and Cathy M. Blattel, of Chaffee, is a 2000 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School in Cape Girardeau.
'Wall that Heals' to visit at Bloomfield museum
A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington will be on display at Bloomfield, Mo., June 20 to 23.
The "Wall That Heals," a half-scale replica of the permanent memorial to the more than 58,000 Americans who died serving their country during the Vietnam War, will be on display at the Stars and Stripes Museum and Library on Highway 25 in Bloomfield.
More than 400 names on the wall are of men from Southeast Missouri.
The wall, 6 feet high and 252 feet long, will be set up on the museum grounds, and will be open 24 hours a day. There will be no charge to view the wall. A special ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. each day, featuring an invocation, singing of the national anthem, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
