A Jerusalem journalist will discuss the Arab-Israeli peace process at a lecture at Southeast Missouri State University.

David Makovsky will speak on the prospects and perils of a Middle East Peace. The lecture will be April 19 at 3:15 p.m. in Crisp Hall Auditorium, Room 125.

The presentation is sponsored by Southeast's political theory club and student government.

Makovsky is diplomatic correspondent and analyst for The Jerusalem Post, and a special correspondent for U.S. News and World Report.

He will talk about the interplay between policy and domestic constraints in both the Israeli and Palestinian camps.

Makovsky recently completed a book on the Israeli decision made during the secret Oslo talks. The book is titled, "Making Peace with the PLO: Policies and Politics of the Rabin Government."

While at Southeast, Makovsky will participate in a seminar with students at noon in the University Center Party Room.

Both the presentation and the seminar are open to the public.

In his job with the Jerusalem Post, Makovsky covers the activities of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Since 1991, his coverage of the peace talks has taken him to Oslo, Madrid, Cairo, Damascus, Amman, Beijing, Tokyo, Bonn, Moscow and Washington.

Last July, Makovsky became the first Israeli reporter to ever visit Syria with high-level Syrian authorization.

Makovsky is a native of St. Louis and received his master's degree in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University.

Makovsky is a 1994 co-recipient of the Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence, presented by the Washington-based National Press Club. The award was for a U.S. News and World Report cover story in April 1993 on the finances of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
