The Mercury capsules were manufactured in St. Louis by what was then the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The vessel that will be displayed in St. Louis is known as Capsule 19. It never flew, but was used as a training device for Project Mercury.

It was another Mercury capsule, Friendship 7, that astronaut John Glenn rode into space in 1962.
