Chaffee's mayoral race heads a list of contested municipal races in Scott and Perry counties. The municipal election is April 4.
Besides its mayoral race, Chaffee also a council seat that's contested.
In Scott City, three of four council members have opponents. All four incumbent aldermen in Oran have challengers. One contest each has developed in Benton and Perryville.
With the filing period ending Tuesday, Chaffee's Ward 1 council member Bill Cannon will face former mayor Bob Capshaw for a four-year term as mayor.
Cannon's term as council member expires in April after serving six years. Cannon, 57, is a retired railroad engineer and businessman, who is involved in civic activities and raising miniature donkeys.
Capshaw, 74, served as Chaffee's mayor from 1971 to 1987. He also served on the city council for six years. A retired businessman, he had been active in various civic organizations.
Because the incumbent in Chaffee's Ward 2 resigned in December, that council seat drew three challengers for the two-year term: Jack Limbaugh, Mike Hinkebein and Ronald Eichhorn.
Running unopposed in the other wards: Ward 1, Ron Davis; Ward 3, incumbent Danny Finley; and Ward 4, incumbent Tom Cunningham.
In Scott City, three of the four alderman wards have races. In Ward 1, incumbent Brenda Moyers is opposed by Rodney Holloway; in Ward 2, incumbent Kenny R. Holder Jr. is opposed by Cindy Williams; and in Ward 4, incumbent Norman Brant is opposed by Terry R. Johnston. Ward 3 incumbent Jerry Cummins is unopposed.
In Oran incumbent Tim Daniels will face Eddie Evans in Ward 1, while incumbent Gil Roslen will oppose Charles Urhahn in Ward 2. In Ward 3, Bill Anderson will challenge incumbent Richard Randolph, and in Ward 4, incumbent Alfred Bonifield will meet Rusty Anderson.
In Benton, there is a race in Ward 2 between incumbent Clayton Hasenkamp and David Mack, who filed in the last hour. The other incumbents for the two-year terms have no opponents: Mayor Joe Stuckey, Ward 1 alderman Howard Bollinger and city collector Beverly Riley.
A lone contested race developed during the last hour in Perryville as incumbent Gary J. Schumer was challenged for the Ward 3 council seat by Harvey E. Schamburg. The other two council incumbents -- Paul W. Dunlap in Ward 1 and Randy J. Leible in Ward 2 have no opponents for the two-year terms.
