The Masonic lodges of Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties in southern Illinois are offering a scholarship to a senior in their district.
Seniors attending Anna-Jonesboro, Cairo, Century, Cobden, Dongola, Egyptian, Meridian and Shawnee public high schools are eligible to attend. Applicants must be in the top 40 percent of their class after seven semesters, have attended their present school at least one year before the award, plan to attend an Illinois institution of higher education and be a U.S. citizen.
To also be eligible, a student shall have received no other scholarship. No distinction is made of race, religion or sex and no Masonic affiliation is required. The intention of the scholarship is to assist a student who has talent to develop, but limited resources to pursue an education.
The sponsoring lodges are Anna Lodge 520, Cairo Lodge 237, Caledonia Lodge 47 at Pulaski, Codben Lodge 466, Dongola Lodge 581, Grand Chain Lodge 660, Jonesboro Lodge 111 and Union Lodge 627 at Lick Creek.
The scholarship will be administered through the office of Dr. Andrea Brown, superintendent for the education service region of Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union counties. Application forms will be available from Brown's office and area high school counselors. The deadline for filing for the scholarship in Brown's office is 4 p.m. April 14.
