ANNA, Ill. -- The Masonic Lodges of Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties have awarded to scholarships. Winners are Melinda Leigh Brown of Century High School and Michael Alan Tarpley of Dongola High School. Brown is the daughter of Michaelj and Phyllis Brown of Ullin. ANNA, Ill. -- The Masonic Lodges of Alexander, Pulaski and Union counties have awarded to scholarships. Winners are Melinda Leigh Brown of Century High School and Michael Alan Tarpley of Dongola High School.

Brown is the daughter of Michaelj and Phyllis Brown of Ullin. She has been active in the French Club, FHA, Science Club, SADD, Scholar Bow., softball, yearbook staff, cheerleader and literary magazine staff.

She has received awards including Who's Who Among American High School Students, United States National Mathematics Award and most improved science award. She plans to attend Shawnee Community College in the fall and later continue at Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in mathematics.

Tarpley is the son of Alan Deidra Tarpley of Dongola. He has been active in basketball, FHA and Pep Club. He has been recognized on the honor roll, Superintendent's Honor Roll, President's Academic Fitness Award, third place in FFA Computer Contest, and student of the month in computers at the Tamms Vocational School. He plans to start his college career in the fall at Shawnee Community College, majoring in business management and administration and accounting.

Masonic lodges in Anna, Cairo, Cobden, Dongola, Jonesboro, Lick Creek and Pulaski participate in the scholarship program.
