The Cape Central Marching Tigers won second place in the opening contest at Lafayette High School in Ballwin.

The band also won the trophy for best marching in its division.

The contest, held Saturday, featured 22 bands. The Tigers were judged in Class AA with eight other bands.

The second-place score was four-tenths of 1 percent lower than the winning band's score.

In the finals, which included the 10 top-scoring bands, the Tigers won third place trophy with a score of two-tenths of 1 percent below the second-place band's score.

This was the first trip to Lafayette for the Tigers, which faced much larger bands.

This Saturday, the band will travel to Washington, Mo., to defend the 1994 Class B Championship. Thirty-eight bands will compete.

The Central band has contests scheduled every Saturday in October.
