MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- After deciding Monday there wasn't enough money available to raise the salary of the city clerk/treasurer by 75 cents an hour, the Marble Hill Board of Aldermen asked city attorney Alan Beussink to look into making a change in the way the city gives raises.
The board asked Beussink to look into raising salaries on a performance-based scale. Currently, raises are given for office personnel on the anniversary date of the hire if the employee asks for one and if money is available.
While the board members all agreed the current city clerk/treasurer's salary is lower than that of comparable cities and that a raise is merited, the board must take care in not opening itself to legal problems if other employees ask for a raise.
"We have to get a handle on this and be fair to everybody," said Alderman Kenneth Trentham.
At an earlier meeting, Mayor Nick Hendricks advised the aldermen he wanted to meet with them and the city's accountant to review the budget and consider personnel costs.
The city started its fiscal year with a deficit budget, and Hendricks said the board needs to find ways to eliminate the gap. The mayor said early Tuesday the meeting has not taken place because of schedule conflicts, but would soon.
