MALDEN, Mo. -- A Malden man accused of pointing a handgun at officers Tuesday evening is in stable condition after being shot by Malden's police chief, ignoring repeated commands to drop his weapon.

At last report, Bobby Cantrell, 48, was in stable condition at a hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound, Malden assistant police chief Jeff Mitchell said.

About 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, a caller told police Cantrell had left the caller's house with a handgun and threatened to kill himself if he spotted police, Mitchell said in a news release.

About a minute later, Cpl. Nick Darter reported finding Cantrell, armed with a revolver, crossing Route J toward an Amerimart store five to six blocks from the caller's home. Darter parked outside the store, where Cantrell pointed the gun at him, Mitchell reported.

Chief Jarrett Bullock and Sgt. Jimmy Phelps arrived, and Bullock began talking to Cantrell, who refused to put the gun down, Mitchell reported.

Cantrell instead pointed the gun at Phelps, at which point Bullock shot Cantrell.

No charges were expected against any of the officers.

An investigation into the shooting continues.
