A Cape Girardeau woman and her 4-year-old daughter were abducted Tuesday and driven out of the state by the woman's former boyfriend, police said.

The 28-year-old woman told police that the 19-year-old man came to her house at 8:30 a.m., Cpl. Kevin Orr said. The man told her that he wanted to mend their broken relationship. Then he asked to borrow her car to go to a job interview on Tuesday, police said.

When she refused, the man took away her keys and locked her in a bedroom in her Jefferson Street residence, Orr said. After an undetermined amount of time, the suspect took her from the bedroom and forced the woman into her car along with her 4-year-old daughter.

The daughter had not been locked in the bedroom with her mother, police said.

The three rode to Cairo, where the man parked the car in front of a house. The woman, who was not restrained, got behind the wheel of the car and drove herself and her daughter to the Cairo Police Department. She was advised to return to Cape Girardeau to report the incident to police, which she did at 11:25 a.m., Orr said.

Police are seeking four separate charges against the suspect: first degree burglary, false imprisonment, assault/adult abuse, and violation of a full order of protection.

The charge of false imprisonment, along with first degree burglary, is a felony since the man drove the woman across the state line. The burglary charge is also a felony, while the other charges are misdemeanors.

The man, believed to be a resident of Cairo, is being sought by police, Orr said. It is thought that he is still in Illinois.
