Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon on South Pacific Street.
About 2:40 p.m., officers responded to a call reporting a man was down and appeared to have lost a large amount of blood on the porch of a home in the 500 block of South Pacific Street, said Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
The man was taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, Hickey said. The man's condition was unknown, but he was conscious, Hickey said.
A little before 4 p.m. Thursday, crime-scene investigators still were processing the scene, he said.
Other officers had gone to the hospital to speak with the victim, Hickey said.
Police do not have a suspect at this time, he said, and the motive in the shooting is unknown.
Since late May, police have investigated at least 11 shootings in or near Cape Girardeau -- many within blocks of Thursday's attack.
Those cases include:
The series of violent outbursts has unnerved neighbors and prompted a joint effort among police, city officials and community leaders to reduce gun violence in the area.
That effort has included meetings; outreach activities by police; a Sept. 20 block party; a march organized by local faith leaders; and the creation of a special phone line people can use to report crime tips to the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
Hickey asked anyone with information about the Thursday shooting to call the department at either its main number, 335-6621, or the anonymous line, 339-6313.
