A 28-year-old man was shot Wednesday evening in connection with a domestic dispute in the area of College Street.

Police confirmed Corey Shannon of Cape Girardeau was the victim.

A witness at the scene, Catrice Moore, who claimed to be the shooting victim's cousin, said Shannon was in a physical altercation with a female when the female's father shot him.

Cape Girardeau Police Department Sgt. Barry Hovis said Shannon had been shot in the lower back and buttocks at least once. Hovis said witnesses told police there was an altercation that led to a shooting outside a home on College Street, and a person was in police custody. Hovis said the shooting was still under review as to whether it was criminal or in self-defense.

Police believe Shannon was shot on College Street, according to Hovis, then fled to the 600 block of Louis Street to look for a ride. He was transported to the emergency room at Southeast Missouri Hospital in a private vehicle after he asked several residents on Louis Street for a ride.

Witnesses at the scene paint a picture of a wounded man scrambling for a ride to the hospital just after shots were fired around 5 p.m. Cape Girardeau police received a call at 5:06 p.m.

One witness, Carl Amos, said he encountered the wounded man while he was in the backyard doing yard work at 615 Louis St. The man asked for a ride to the hospital, and when Amos refused, scrambled around to the front of the residence.

Another witness, Brian Vogel of 627 Louis St., said a heavy-set black man in a T-shirt and blue jeans was harassing his mother, demanding a ride to the hospital, when she arrived home just after 5 p.m.

Marie Stearns of 624 Louis St. said she was on her porch when the man approached her, said he had been shot and asked for a ride. According to Stearns, the man lifted his T-shirt to show where he had been shot in the lower back.

Blake Popp said he was the one who took the wounded man to the hospital. The man told Popp had been shot three times in the lower back. When asked why he gave the shooting victim transportation, Popp said "Because I'm a good guy."

Popp was busy trying to clean a large amount of blood off his car's passenger seat when he talked to the Southeast Missourian.
