MALDEN, Mo. -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a nonfatal, officer-involved shooting that happened Tuesday evening when officers confronted a man with a handgun.

About 5:20 p.m., Malden police responded to the area of Frisco Park about a potentially suicidal person, according to a news release from Sgt. Kevin Hunter, public information officer for the patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control.

A 48-year-old Malden man, who was armed with a handgun, was found on North Douglass Street, Hunter said.

"As officers arrived on the scene, the subject flourished the handgun at a citizen near a local business," Hunter said. "The subject did not comply with the officer's verbal commands to drop the weapon."

After the man pointed the gun at a Malden officer, one of them shot him, Hunter said.

According to other media outlets, the incident occured at the Amerimart in the 600 block of North Douglass Street.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment, Hunter said. The extent of his injuries was not known.

No officers were injured.
