CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Quick action by rescuers saved the life of a man who fell into the icy waters of the Mississippi River, according to the Standard Democrat. About 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Mississippi County Rescue Squad was sent to the Birds Point Terminal Area in rural Mississippi County to assist with a man who had fallen from a barge into the Mississippi River.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Quick action by rescuers saved the life of a man who fell into the icy waters of the Mississippi River, according to the Standard Democrat. About 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Mississippi County Rescue Squad was sent to the Birds Point Terminal Area in rural Mississippi County to assist with a man who had fallen from a barge into the Mississippi River. According to Mississippi County Rescue Squad director Danny Harris, the man was working on a barge when he fell into the river. A boat was dispatched from the nearby Ohio River to assist in retrieving the man from the water. The victim was taken to Fort Defiance Park at Cairo, Ill., for treatment until the arrival of a helicopter to Saint Francis Medical Center at Cape Girardeau.
