CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- An Arkansas man was killed early Sunday when the car he was driving ran off a road in the Missouri Bootheel and overturned several times, authorities said.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said David Nichols, 23, of Blytheville, Ark., was killed in the accident on Pemiscot County Road U, three miles west of Caruthersville.
Nichols and five passengers, also from Blytheville, were thrown from the vehicle. All the passengers were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
Also, a Memphis, Tenn., woman was moderately injured Sunday afternoon in an accident on Highway 77 outside Benton, Mo.
Lena Martin, 41, was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston after her car was hit by another vehicle. The second vehicle was driven by Dale J. Penny, 73, of Cape Girardeau.
Penny was issued a summons by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, according to the accident report.
