An elderly Cape Girardeau man died Tuesday when a tractor rolled over him in a farming accident near Egypt Mills.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Carpenter said he pronounced the man, John A. Haupt, 73, of Route 1, dead at 1:45 p.m. due to massive head and chest injuries.
The accident happened in a field about a mile off of County Road 635 and about one-half to two miles south of Egypt Mills, he said.
The accident occurred about 1:40 p.m. as Haupt and his son, whose name and age were unavailable, were plowing, said Carpenter.
The tractor's brake mechanism slipped as Haupt stopped to get some debris out of the tractor's plow, he said. The tractor began to roll backwards and Haupt tried to jump on it.
Carpenter said the right rear wheel ran over Haupt. He identified the tractor as an Allis Chalmer model.
