A man was injured after shots were fired at the corner of William and South Hanover streets Tuesday night.

About 9 p.m., an African-American man was shot in the back, according to witness Diedre Ward. Ward lives in an apartment complex at 210 S. Hanover St. and said she saw the victim get shot.

"They were just shooting, a whole bunch this time. I wasn't counting. He was shot right there [in the parking lot of the apartment complex] from the middle of the alley, and he shot that boy. I know that boy," Ward said. "He's ... about 21 or 22."

Ward described the shooter as an African-American male with pink shirt, bluejeans and a colorful belt around his waist.

"(The shooter), after he shot, he came back," Ward said, "but when it started getting hot, he took off."

Ward said she saw the shooter run south down South Hanover Street.

Another witness who said he was at the apartment complex said he heard six to nine shots fired.

Ward said she believes some of the men involved in the shooting live near the 900 block of William Street. Ward said she's often seen the same group of men around her apartment building.

The shooting took place next to the AM PM gas station on William Street. The manager working there said hearing shots in the neighborhood isn't uncommon. The manager, who refused to be named, said he knew the victim and that he was shot in the back.

A Cape Girardeau Police Department officer at the scene did not comment on the extent of the man's injuries, saying only one victim was transported to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Asked about the cause of the violence, one woman across the street, who said she was a witness to the shooting, said she believed all the parties involved were on drugs.

"They don't need to hang around here. They need to find something else to do with their time," Ward said.
