Man in standoff faces four charges

A Tamms, Ill., man who kept Cape Girardeau police at bay for about 20 minutes Tuesday was charged with four felonies.

Clifton N. Brown, 22, was being held in Cape Girardeau County Jail on a $50,000 bond for three drug charges and one charge of resisting arrest.

Cape Girardeau County prosecutors also charged Brown's girlfriend, Crystal Warren, 21, of 412 S. Benton St., with drug trafficking and felony drug possession. Warren's bond was also set at $50,000.

According to a sworn affidavit from officer Daniel Seger, a search warrant served Monday on a storage locker rented by Brown uncovered 5 pounds of marijuana, four rifles and ammunition.

When Brown tried to enter the storage unit Tuesday, he fled as officers approached. Warren, who was in a separate vehicle, refused a police request to search her car, Seger wrote. She was allowed to leave on foot but the car was kept under police control until a K-9 unit could be brought to the scene.

The dog detected drugs and police found 6 grams of cocaine and crack cocaine hidden under the car's hood, along with a scale, Seger wrote.

Brown was cornered in an apartment at 639 S. Spring St., where he surrendered after a 20-minute standoff with police.

During a search of the apartment, officers found two small baggies of marijuana and two pistols and ammunition, Seger wrote.

Under questioning, Seger wrote, Brown admitted that the guns and ammunition in the storage locker were his, but that he had found a backpack containing the marijuana. He admitted owning one of the guns and the ammunition found at the apartment but not the other gun or the marijuana.

The cocaine, Brown told police, was in the backpack when he found it.
