CAIRO, Ill. -- One of two men who pleaded guilty to a series of arsons in and around Cairo was sentenced to probation Wednesday.

David Patrick, 24, and Richard Pitcher, 19, each pleaded guilty to two arson charges in April.

Circuit Court Judge Charles Cavaness on Wednesday placed Patrick on probation for 2 1/2 years, according to Alexander County State's Attorney Jeffrey Farris.

"I did not recommend probation," Farris said.

Patrick and Pitcher were accused of starting fires in January 2011 on 33rd Street in Cairo and near the Mississippi River levee.

Pitcher is scheduled for sentencing at 9 a.m. July 25.
