A Jackson man died when his pickup truck flew off the interstate and landed in a creek late Friday night, the state Highway Patrol said.

Randy Joe Emerson, 37, was driving a Ford pickup truck near the junction of Highway 61 and Interstate 55 when his truck struck a bridge railing about 11:30 p.m., the highway patrol said. The truck became airborne and landed in a creek.

It was submerged in about seven feet of water, said Cape Girardeau firefighter Mark Hasheider.

Emerson was taken from the scene by helicopter to Southeast Missouri Hospital, where he later died from injuries.
