Firefighters from the East County Fire Protection District assisted by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department work to extricate the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a ditch off Perryville Road near the city limit Tuesday morning. Firefighters say that around 11 a.m., the man was rounding a curve going south on Perryville Road when he lost control and overcorrected and ended up in a steep ditch. Cape Girardeau city and county firefighters had to remove the truck's roof, a door and part of its bed to remove the man, who was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, Cape Girardeau assistant fire chief Mark Hasheider said. The wreck occurred in the same area where three other serious accidents have happened in the last six months, Hasheider said. Slick roads may have been a factor, and the steep terrain and wet conditions made the rescue difficult, he said.
