A man said to have been wielding a knife and charging a police officer has died after the officer shot him, according to a news release issued by the Cape Girardeau Police Department early Thursday morning.
Shortly after 10 p.m. an officer was investigating "suspicious activity" at a residence in the 600 block of La Petite Court, the release stated.
"The subject advanced with the knife, towards the officer, in a threatening manner," the news release stated. "The officer discharged his firearm, striking the male subject multiple times."
The man was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. The officer was not injured.
The police are not releasing the name of the deceased until close family members are notified.
The officer, according to the release, has been placed on administrative leave, per the department's policy, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
