A shooting inside a Cape Girardeau County residence Monday afternoon left one dead and another hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.
Emergency crews from East County Fire Protection District, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Cape County Private Ambulance Service responded to a house on Tecumseh Lane, situated a good distance back from County Road 646, just off of what is known as Billy Goat's Hill.
Inside, they found the body of the suspected shooter and the woman believed to be his victim, Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton said.
Their identities were not released as of press time.
East County Fire Protection District received the call about 2:50 p.m.
The caller, believed to be a relative of the victim and alleged shooter, said two people had been shot, one of them hit in the head, according to Lt. David James, chief deputy of the sheriff's department.
Early investigation indicated the man shot the woman several times and then took his own life, James said.
The woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds, at least one to the head, from a small caliber revolver, James said.
The extent of her injuries are not yet known, but she was conscious and talking to emergency workers before being transported to Southeast Missouri Hospital, James said.
Two family members were inside the home when the shooting occurred, James said.
A young child lived at the residence, neighbors said, but was at school when the shooting occurred. A relative or friend of the family informed the school after the shooting, so the school bus would not drop her off at the residence. No children were present during the incident, James said.
