KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A man was critically wounded while driving on Interstate 35 in a shooting, police said.
The 69-year-old victim's car came to a near stop on the congested highway on Wednesday after the bullet struck him in his check and lodged inside his mouth. Another car rear-ended his vehicle at a low speed, police spokesman Darin Snapp said.
The driver of the second vehicle was not hurt and approached the victim's car. The wounded man asked the other driver to call 911. No one else was in the victim's car.
Police closed the interstate for nearly 90 minutes. They searched for shell casings but were unable to find them. Snapp said it was unlikely that the driver was shot by someone standing atop a highway overpass based on the angle of the bullet.
"It probably came from another vehicle," Snapp said of the bullet. "We don't know that for sure. He hasn't been able to talk to us."
