One man was critically injured after an early morning shooting Friday in Cape Girardeau, and police said several people were detained for questioning.

Cape Girardeau Police Department public information officer Darin Hickey said officers were called to a home at 1467 Kingsway Drive about 2:40 a.m. Friday after a neighbor reported shots fired.

En route to the scene, one officer encountered a car driving recklessly at Themis Street and Clark Avenue. Police stopped the vehicle, and a shooting victim was found in the passenger seat. The man was shot in the chest. His identity and age were not released. He was taken to an area hospital.

Hickey said other officers went to the house on Kingsway, and a search warrant was obtained. Crime scene investigators worked at the scene Friday morning. Yellow tape encircled the house and yard, and the rear window of a white car in the carport was damaged.

Those involved in the incident, including the driver of the car that was stopped earlier that morning, were taken into police custody. Hickey said the area was safe on Friday.

Hickey said he would not speculate on a reason or a motive in the shooting, and police remained uncertain whether charges would be filed.

A database search of the address where the shooting took place showed police have been to the house before -- a man living there in July 2012 was charged with manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine. The arrest and charges came after a police raid on the home.

"We review premise history whenever there is a crime occurring at a residence, and we take that into account during our investigation," Hickey said. "It may or may not play a part. Whether it be a drug case, domestic case, stealing case or whatever it may be, it's an investigative look that we always do."
