Capt. Charles Westrich of the Naval Reserve is skipper of the SACLANT Det. 118 in Kansas City -- his seventh command in a row.
Westrich, of 1537 Briarcliff, has had commanded positions for the past 13 years in the Naval Reserve.
Westrich served six months in Desert Storm working for Naval Forces Central Command as the assistant force plans and policy officer. Westrich was among those who volunteered for duty in the Middle East.
Westrich said he joined the Navy to see the world. In May, he was in Bahrain on Navy duty; went to Korea in August, where he worked with the Seventh Fleet flagship; and was involved in an exercise in the Philippines this month.
While deployed during Operation Desert Storm, he traveled in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in conjunction with his duties.
After 25 years in the construction and motel development business, Westrich is co-owner of Westlegg Corp., a retail-wholesale business.
He and his wife Lynn have two daughters, Renee, 23, and Cassie, 15.
