Man charged in attack now in federal custody

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Springfield man charged in a what authorities say was a racially motivated stabbing at a Denny's restaurant will remain in federal custody until his trial, the U.S. Attorney's office said Wednesday. At a detention hearing, the court ordered Michael McCormick to be held without bond, saying his release would create a risk of danger to the community. Detention hearings for two other defendants, Kenny Johnsen and Mark Kooms, are scheduled for Friday morning. Prosecutors plan to ask the court to hold Johnsen and Kooms until trial as well.

Court hearings for two other defendants have not yet been scheduled.

A federal indictment alleges that the men conspired to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate Maurice Wilson and Kenny Wright, both black, to prevent them from freely dining in a public restaurant.

Wilson was stabbed three times during the attack but has since recovered.
