A man was taken into custody Sunday after an incident with a Cape Girardeau police officer at a convenience store.
John Mitchell of Cape Girardeau County was wanted for a felony parole violation with no bond, according to Sgt. Jason Selzer of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
About 5:15 a.m. officers received a tip that Mitchell may be in a vehicle at Rhodes 101 Convenience Store at 10 S. West End Blvd. Selzer said an officer approached the car described, asked Mitchell his name, and, after Mitchell gave a fake name, the officer asked him to exit the vehicle. The suspect then fled on foot along Independence Street toward Tipton Linen, Selzer said.
Selzer said the officer tried to apprehend Mitchell using a Taser, but ultimately pepper spray was used to catch the suspect.
The officer received minimal injuries in the pursuit.
Before Mitchell was taken to Cape Girardeau County Jail where he is being held, he was seen by ambulance personnel and a nurse at the police station regarding his injuries.
Mitchell has a warrant for felony resisting arrest based on the charges from Sunday morning, in addition to warrant for felony parole violation, according to Selzer.
