Man accused in shooting pleads guilty

ST. LOUIS -- A 71-year-old man accused of wounding a doctor and medical technician in a shooting at an eye clinic last year pleaded guilty Monday to charges of assault and armed criminal action.

Joseph Spiller of Lemay admitted shooting ophthalmologist Steven Verity and technician Roxanne Canter on April 23, 2001, at the Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute, part of the St. Louis University Medical Center. Neither died from the injuries.

There was no plea agreement. Prosecutors say they'll seek life in prison at sentencing June 14.
