Registration is under way for "Making Strides Against Cancer," a non-competitive five-mile move-along-a-thon to benefit the Cape Girardeau County Unit of the American Cancer Society.

Former and current cancer patients, their families, Cancer Society volunteers and the general public are invited to be part of Making Strides.

"Anyone who's interested in walking, jogging, bicycling, roller skating or any other form of locomotion is encouraged to participate," said Debbie Leoni, chairman of the event.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday at Charles Clippard Elementary School in Cape Girardeau.

Similar events will take place that day throughout the state. Local sponsors are St. Francis Medical Center and Southeast Missouri Hospital. Participants are asked to obtain sponsors regardless of how many miles they walk, run or roll.

"Making Strides is as much of an awareness raiser about cancer as it is a fund-raiser," said Viney Mosley, American Cancer Society field representative.

"Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made not only in cancer cure rates, but in the quality of life following cancer treatment."

Registration forms are available from the local Cancer Society office situated on the upper floor of the Medical Arts building, 937 Broadway. A registration table will also be set up at Clippard School starting at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
