JACKSON -- The Jackson Board of Education approved a make-up schedule for days missed due to inclement weather during a meeting Tuesday night.

The district scheduled two more school days this year than the state-mandated 174 days in session. However, there also have been five cancellations with two months left before spring's arrival.

The high number of missed days means at least three days need to be recovered in the school year to meet state requirements.

Board members approved plans to hold classes on days previously set aside to commemorate Martin Luther King's birthday and President's Day, as well as three pre-assigned make-up days in April. A plan also was adopted in case bad weather forces more school cancellations this year.

"We don't necessarily like this makeup sequence, but we're doing the best we can with what we have," said schools superintendent Dr. Howard Jones. "After losing eight days by state guidelines theoretically we'd only have to make up one for every two days missed."

Because of the changes in the calendar, the school board also voted to delay the end of first semester and third quarter by one week.

First semester will now end Jan. 22. School will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 to allow teachers to conduct semester conferences, grade finals and prepare grade reports.

Third quarter will now end March 26.

Following are the school district's scheduled weather make-up days in the order they were taken from the calendar:

Jan. 18

Feb. 15

April 7
