Some of the top names in contemporary Christian rock music came together on the Show Me Center stage Sunday to perform for church groups and families from around Missouri.

A total of 4,337 attended the Make a Difference Tour in Cape Girardeau, a three-hour concert featuring TobyMac, Michael W. Smith, Third Day and Jason Gray.

Max Lucado, an inspirational speaker and author of more than 60 books, spoke briefly between performances about the mission of the Make a Difference Tour, which is being held in more than 20 cities this month to benefit World Vision, an organization dedicated to tackling poverty and helping families in more than 100 countries.

Lucado said the tour is to remind Christians that God supports them so Christians can do the same for others, among other reasons.

"God blesses us so we can bless others. He teaches us so we can teach others," Lucado said.

Hadley and Janel Barber of Poplar Bluff, Mo., said they bought tickets to the tour's stop in Cape Girardeau the second day they were on sale. They said Lucado has always inspired them.

"He gives us that uplifting feeling," Janel Barber said. "And since we rededicated our lives to Christ about 10 years ago we've been listening to Christian music."

Scott City teenager Donielle Howell, who with her youth group friends scored tickets to stand near the concert stage, was thrilled to see TobyMac, a four-time Grammy Award winner known also for starting the group DC Talk.

"What they sing is how they live," Howell said. "There was no way I wasn't going to be here right up front."

TobyMac and his band followed Gray, the first to perform Sunday. About an hour into the show, Michael W. Smith, Mac and Third Day lead singer Mac Powell performed from a platform near the sound stage at the back of the arena.

Piedmont, Mo., sisters Cassie and Dessa Goodman bought tickets to see all the performers, who they said they'd never seen in concert before.

"They're more of a rock vibe, but it's still a really good message," Cassie Goodman said.

Lucado said seeing Smith, TobyMac and Powell together on the same stage will most likely only happen for the Make a Difference Tour.

"You're one of the few groups to see them sing together," Lucado said. "Together we really believe we can make a difference."
