Make a Difference award given to honor society

A project to provide Golden Books to babies born at Cape Girardeau hospitals has won a national Make A Difference Day award. USA Weekend Magazine is recognizing more than 550 volunteer efforts that took place around the nation on Oct. 25 as part of the 13th annual Make A Difference Day. Phi Kappa Phi honor society at Southeast Missouri State University is being honored for its Born to Read program which distributes children's books along with a letter designed to get parents to read to their babies. The honor society is starting its fourth year of buying and handing out the books, including such titles as "Little Red Hen" and "Wheels on the Bus." The group now distributes about 1,600 books annually to babies born at Southeast Missouri Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.
