Missouri's major party nominees for U.S. Senate have agreed to participate in a debate Oct. 24 before an audience of newspaper people.

Democratic Sen. Jean Carnahan and her Republican challenger, former U.S. Rep. Jim Talent, won their respective primaries on Tuesday.

Both have agreed to participate in a debate hosted by the Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors, the Missouri Society of Newspaper Editors and the Columbia Daily Tribune.

The debate is to be held in Columbia at a site and time to be announced.

Mrs. Carnahan and Talent were invited to a candidate forum last May during a joint meeting of the APME and MSNE. Talent attended, spoke and answered questions, but Mrs. Carnahan said she could not attend because of a previous commitment.

However, the senator urged the groups to schedule a Senate forum after the primaries.
