FREDERICKTOWN -- Madison County voters by a margin of two votes Tuesday approved a half-cent sales tax to fund construction of a county jail. The vote was 1,112 to 1,110.
In all, 2,282 voters went to the polls in the primary election, or about 31.6 percent of the county's 7,200 registered voters.
On the Democratic side, Jim Rauls defeated Presiding Commissioner Ken Pate, 768 to 606. He will face Republican Robert "Bob" Mooney in the November general election.
Mooney garnered 411 votes to 335 for Charles Skaggs and 52 for William F. Jud in the Republican primary.
In the 2nd District associate commissioner contest on the Democratic side, incumbent Willis DeSpain won. DeSpain received 286 votes; Tina Bales, 212; Jerry Graham, 132; James Goldsberry, 100; and Floyd A. Shell Jr., 41.
On the Republican side, Larry Mungle defeated L.E. "Shorty" Hollinger, 230 to 107. Mungle will face DeSpain in the November election.
Incumbent Don Myers was unopposed for re-election as 1st District associate commissioner in the Democratic primary. He will face Republican Randell Smith in November. Smith was unopposed in the Republican primary.
In the circuit clerk and recorder's contest on the Democratic side, Eileen Provow defeated Delories "Dee" Hall, 891 to 450.
Provow will face Republican Kay "Francis" Bradford in the November election.
In the treasurer's race, incumbent Bernice Saling defeated Pat Nations Graham in the Democratic contest, 745 to 612.
Saling will face Republican Kay Rehkop in the November election.
