JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau's political duo of Democrat Bekki Cook and Republican Peter Kinder combined have raised nearly $3 million in their rival bids to become lieutenant governor.
As of Thursday, Kinder was sitting on nearly $199,067 in his campaign account, according to financial disclosure reports filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission. Meanwhile, Cook had nearly depleted her war chest, even after making a $200,000 personal loan to her campaign. Cook was left with just $17,815 in the bank.
Counting collections for both the party primary and general elections, Kinder, the president pro tem of the Missouri Senate, had raised $1.35 million. During the reporting period covering the first three weeks of October, Kinder collected $232,540 in cash and in-kind contributions.
During the course of her campaign, Cook had raised $1.51 million. Including the loan, she took in $480,573 during the last reporting period.
Looking at just money Cook received from donors, 53.3 percent of her collections came from Democratic Party sources or special interest groups. Various wings of the party provided her $118,877. Interest groups, almost exclusively unions, added $30,525.
Only 29.3 percent of Kinder's money in the last period came from the Republican Party or special interests. GOP organizations contributed $48,344, while interest groups, primarily those representing businesses, chipped in $19,700.
Kinder is the assistant to the chairman of Rust Communications, which owns the Southeast Missourian.
Also on the Nov. 2 ballot for lieutenant governor are Bruce Hillis of Dexter, the Constitution Party candidate, and Libertarian Mike Ferguson of Belton. Neither has actively raised money.
