Low oxygen levels near dam threaten trout industry

LAKE TANEYCOMO, Mo. -- Cold water coming through power-generating turbines at Table Rock Dam in southwest Missouri is threatening the downstream trout industry.

Experts say the water often lacks enough oxygen in the late summer and fall to keep the trout healthy in Lake Taneycomo. The Environmental Protection Agency is asking the state to fix the problem.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on how to get more oxygen into the trout habitat.

The DNR is required to submit a final report on the issue to the EPA by the end of the year.

A Missouri Conservation Department biologist says low oxygen levels keep the fish from eating and makes them lethargic.
