The recent trend of cool weather in Cape Girardeau and the region has neared, or broken, existing low-temperature records for July.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., the temperature at Barkley Regional Airport in Paducah hit a record low of 51 degrees Sunday, breaking the record of 52 degrees set in 2004. The low temperature Sunday at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport was 53 degrees, which tied a mark also set in 2004.

"What's been happening is that a series of fronts have been coming in and out of the area," said Dave Purdy, meteorological technician for the National Weather Service. "They have created the cooler temperatures, but we should be getting back to summer soon."

Purdy said the National Weather Service's forecast for today calls for showers with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 60s. Wednesday may see thunderstorms with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s.
