In an effort to raise funds to continue to match people in need with local churches that can help them, Love INC (In the Name of Christ) will hold its second annual dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church.

During the past year, Love INC matched 1,100 families in need by referring them to local church food pantries, clothes closets and other ministry services. The organization has also provided other services, from automobile repairs to home improvements like installing a wheelchair ramp.

This year's annual dinner will feature Robert Odom, national president of Love INC. Odom has worked in organizations dedicated to serving those in poverty for more than 25 years. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 382-2457 and will also be available at the door.

Love INC has more than 140 local affiliates in 30 states, representing more than 9,000 churches, 6,000 community-based organizations and more than 300,000 volunteers. Nationwide the organization serves more than 1 million people.

In Cape Girardeau County, Love INC operates a clearinghouse center where trained volunteers take client calls, verify the information provided and then find specific ways to help them.

During 2009, the organization distributed $76,000 worth of goods and services to families in need of assistance in Cape Girardeau County.

"Many times people just don't know what's available," said Eva Hillis, executive director of Love INC. "We connect them with churches who can meet their request."

The organization, now in its third year of service, is funded by local churches and the United Way of Southeast Missouri.

"We've been so well accepted by the agencies in this area, and it's an incredible opportunity we have to serve our community," Hillis said. The organization works with 23 local churches.

Volunteers also are key to the program's success, she said. Love INC needs volunteers to help take client calls. Last year the organization received more than 1,600 calls for assistance.
