KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas City, Kan., School Board has chosen assistant superintendent Cynthia Lane to be the district's next superintendent.
Lane will take over the school district on July 1, when current Superintendent Jill Shackelford retires.
Board members chose Lane during a meeting on Tuesday.
As the assistant Superintendent for instruction and business, Lane oversaw the budget and helped lead the district through deep financial cuts last year.
Lane has worked in education since 1982, with 22 years in the Kansas City, Kan. district. She started her career as a special education teacher.
